Lower Shore Progressive Caucus joins a coalition of Eastern Shore groups to demand Eastern Shore state representatives stand up to Andy Harris on Off-Shore wind

Salisbury, August, 7th, 2019 -- The Lower Shore Progressive Caucus is proud to announce the creation of a coalition of local groups and elected officials from across the Eastern Shore to call on every member of the Eastern Shore delegation in Annapolis to stand up to Andy Harris concerning his position against off-shore wind project development.

Recently Representative Andy Harris has been trying to delay and ultimately kill the off-shore wind project off the coast of Ocean City.  His actions are putting jobs and economic growth at risk here on the Eastern Shore. That is why this coalition is calling on all our representatives to publicly stand up to Representative Harris and demand he stops his current efforts to kill jobs and opportunities on the Eastern Shore.

The construction of offshore wind and future green energy projects across the Eastern Shore would allow for the birth of a modern clean energy economy that will produce thousands of skilled family-supporting jobs across our entire region. According to the Public Service Commission, this first offshore wind project alone would bring $1.8 billion of in-state spending as well as 9,700 direct and indirect jobs.  Keeping in mind that the U.S. industry is just beginning to develop this tremendous untapped offshore wind resource, this presents an opportunity for the Eastern Shore and all of Maryland to put our businesses and our workers at the forefront of this burgeoning American industry.

The Lower Shore Progressive Caucus opposes building a new Redskins’ stadium at Oxon Cove Park

Salisbury, January 8, 2019 -- The Lower Shore Progressive Caucus stands united in opposition to the proposed idea to build the Washington Redskins a new football stadium at Oxon Cove Park in Prince George’s County.

Currently, with some many other important issues facing the state like climate change, the declining health of the Chesapeake Bay, skyrocketing healthcare costs, unfunded schools, and more, the Governor’s ambitious plan to build Billionaire Dan Snyder a new stadium is misguided and the opposite of what the state should be focusing on moving forward.

If the Governor is wanting to undertake projects to start economic growth in the state, we encourage him to invest in the hardworking people of the Lower Eastern Shore by investing in new infrastructure, improving rural healthcare, adding more education programs, and looking to attract good-paying jobs to a region that desperately needs it.

Rep. Andy Harris Needs to Come Clean About Family History

SALISBURY, MAY 28, 2019 -- Rep. Andy Harris has long campaigned on his family ties to Hungary, though now surfacing from family members in Hungary, are reports that Harris’ father, Zoltán Haris, are reports that Harris’ family history isn’t as squeaky clean as he tries to paint it. “Family relatives recalled that Rep. Harris’s father served in the pro-Hitler Hungarian army and was probably captured by the Soviets and sent to a POW camp. The Hungarian army fought against the Allies, including the Americans. About 1,000 US airmen were killed in Hungary during WWII.” reports the Hungarian Free Press.

  • Ocean City Council Set to Kill Wind Turbine Renewable Energy Project, which would’ve brought nearly 10,000 jobs to the Lower Shore Press Release

    ANNOUNCEMENT

Ocean City Council Set to Kill Wind Turbine Renewable Energy Project, which would’ve brought nearly 10,000 jobs to the Lower Shore

    SALISBURY, MD February 5, 2018 --

The Lower Shore Progressive Caucus is sad to announce that the Ocean City Council plans to pass a “Resolution in Opposition of Permanent Offshore Wind Turbines Visible from Ocean City” tomorrow at 6 at City Hall Council Chambers, 301 North Baltimore Ave, Ocean City. The Council claims that it doesn’t want to build the wind turbines off the coast of Maryland because they would be 13 miles off the Coast of Ocean City and visible from the beach, which the Council believes would be bad for tourism, and therefore bad for the local economy.

However, the Council’s claims that this will be bad for Ocean City’s economy are mostly baseless. In fact, the wind farm being built would actually probably be helpful to Ocean City’s economy, considering the proposed wind farm would be made up of over 100 wind turbines, whose construction would create nearly 10,000 jobs directly and indirectly for Ocean City and the Lower Shore in general, which is home to the 2 poorest counties in the state. The wind farm in Ocean City is popular with both citizens in Ocean City and seasonal vacationers, with it having a 69% approval rating in Baltimore County and a 72% approval rating on the Lower Eastern Shore, according to an OpinionWorks poll conducted in December 2017. The Ocean City Council’s fears seem to be largely imaginary, considering the polls show that the vast majority of people don’t seem to mind the wind farm.

We strongly urge the OC Council to reconsider voting against the wind farm. Ocean City has already committed to a 100% clean energy supply portfolio initiative, so these wind turbines would work perfectly towards achieving that goal. The Lower Shore desperately needs job opportunities, and we’d hate to see those nearly 10,000 jobs go to Delaware or another neighboring state. The wind turbines are great and necessary for our environment and economy.
